BCycle Electric Bike Share Launches in Encinitas
Starting today, Encinitas residents and visitors can rent electric bikes from BCycle, one of the nation's largest bike share companies. The ebikes are docked at 15 different locations along the Coast Highway 101 and Encinitas Community Park, and riders can rent them for as little as $7 for 30 minutes for a quick ride around town.

“We are thrilled to bring electric assist bike share to Encinitas,” said Tim Pirkey, Manager of Encinitas BCycle. “The new system is going to make a positive impact in the community by providing an accessible form of transportation while improving community members' health and quality of life.”
The electric-power-assist bikes are made by Electra, which has its headquarters in Encinitas, and is a subsidiary of the Trek company. Each bike has a basket and a bell, plus there is a built-in cord phone holder so you can safely use GPS hands-free while riding. People renting the bikes must be at least 18 years old, and the bikes are limited to speeds of 17 mph. If the speed limit is exceeded, the electric-motor-assist function will turn off.
Encinitas BCycle will offer ebike education and safety events in the coming months. The company also plans to expand its docking station locations eastward in Encinitas within the next few months and also has ambitions to offer the same bike sharing services in neighboring cities like Solana Beach, Del Mar and Carlsbad.
Riders can purchase a Single Ride Pass for $7 per 30 minutes. Longer-term options include a monthly pass for $30 and an Annual Pass for $150, both of which allow riders to take unlimited 30-minute trips.
