Isabelle DeMillan, Owner / Founder of The Mighty Bin
The Mighty Bin, San Diego's first fully zero-waste grocery store is now open in the heart of North Park. The store is conveniently set up to be your one-stop-shop for everything you could possibly need for your household.
How do I shop zero-waste?
The key to zero-waste living and shopping is using reusable containers like glass or metal jars, reusable boxes and totes. (Don't have these on hand? Not to worry! The Mighty Bin offers donated jars for use or jars on deposit, plus containers and totes for purchase in the store.)
So gather up all of your jars and containers and head into The Mighty Bin to the counter to have your containers weighed. You'll then have a tag for each container with the recorded weight.
Next, fill up your jars with all of the great products on offer. Items carried at The Mighty Bin include:
- Cereal / granola
- Coffee and loose leaf tea
- Cooking oils, baking items, sugar/sweeteners, vinegar, sauces
- Dried fruit
- Eggs, tofu and tempeh
- Fresh produce
- Grains, nuts and seeds
- Legumes
- Milk, butter, cheese, plant-based mylks and cheeze
- Pasta
- Prepared plant-based meals
- Snacks and sweets
- Spices
- Bath and body care
- Cleaning supplies
- Supplements
The final step is to bring your filled goods to The Mighty Bin checkout counter for a final weigh and tag scan. You'll only pay for the weight of the actual product.
Looking for a contactless, zero-waste option? The Mighty Bin offers online grocery ordering and you can pick up your groceries packed in either compostable paper bags or glass jars for purchase or deposit.
Zero-waste Partners
The Mighty Bin has partnered with The Compost Group to host an in-store drop-off and pick-up site for your composting buckets. You can also drop off your extra jars and containers and The Mighty Bin will sanitize the items for customers to reuse.
The Mighty Bin also offers several helpful zero-waste, DIY resources on its website and lists of local sustainable resources throughout San Diego County.
