Built to Last: How Encinitas' Sage Health Has Thrived for Over 26 Years

In an industry built around constant reinvention, Encinitas’ Sage Health is betting that the future of wellness is centered around giving clients everything they need in one place.

In the landscape of modern small business, longevity is a rare and hard-won victory. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, roughly 50% of small businesses close their doors within the first five years, and only about 25% make it to the 15-year mark. To build a wellness practice that not only survives but thrives for 26 years requires immense grit, constant reinvention, and a deep, intuitive alignment with what consumers actually need.

This steady and adaptive approach to growth has been the cornerstone for Sage Health, an integrative wellness center in Encinitas. While fitness and wellness trends cycle through rapid, high-turnover phases, founder Dr. Kirsten Sage has built a sustainable, comprehensive sanctuary that caters to total-body relief under a single roof.

That relentless dedication traces directly back to Dr. Kirsten Sage’s own path to founding the practice, which is rooted in deep resilience. Growing up with a single mother battling severe back injuries and eventual opiate addiction, she witnessed firsthand the heavy toll that chronic pain and fragmented, reactive healthcare can take on a family. "It's just a hard thing to have to have happen," she says. "Looking back, growing up as a child with a sick parent who would sleep all the time — that's what led me to want to help people."

Inspired by a pivotal turning point in junior college that reintroduced her to competitive swimming coupled with supportive mentors, she dedicated her life to proactive movement, rehabilitation, and care. “I love what I do,” Dr. Sage states. “Any kind of shift I can help people with—to avoid back surgeries and drugs that may be unnecessary, to change their lives and make their lives better—is what my passion is.”

After moving from San Francisco to Encinitas and launching her practice in the early 2000s, Dr. Sage recognized early on that traditional, single-modality care had its limits. To truly help patients avoid invasive surgeries and unnecessary drugs, she spent a decade balancing family life and running her practice to earn a degree from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM) in 2019. This enabled her to pioneer unique integrative offerings like CAM (Chiropractic Acupuncture Massage), a comprehensive hour-long treatment combining multiple therapies.

Over the years, she has continued to integrate cutting-edge technologies into the practice, including advanced SoftWave therapy for chronic joint issues and osteoarthritis, and class 4 laser therapy for accelerated tissue healing using a process called photobiomodulation.

The center's newest expansion into yoga and intentional movement evolved from Dr. Sage's own recovery needs. Now 55 and a longtime triathlete who once competed in half Ironmans, she'd started noticing more hamstring strain, achier hips, and shifting hormones.

"I felt like one part of Sage Health that was missing was the part where people would get moving," Dr. Sage says. Rather than building an overwhelming, impersonal fitness factory, she has brought in experienced instructors from nearby studios to teach vinyasa yoga, yin yoga, Tai Chi, and sound baths to round out the clinical side of the practice. Capped at just nine participants per session, the studio’s intimate, personalized movement classes cater directly to those needing deep restoration, mobility and mindfulness.

"Movement was pivotal in my life," she says. "I thought this would be super helpful to our ecosystem of patients."

Echoing her personal upbringing and lack of access to quality support resources, affordability has also been a non-negotiable for Dr. Sage from the start. Sage Health has always accepted insurance, allowing many patients to see a chiropractor for as little as a $10 copay.

"A lot of people work really hard for their benefits, and it's helpful for them to know they could come to a place like Sage Health," Dr. Sage says. It's a deliberate counterweight to the growing boutique wellness industry that risks widening the gap between premium, high-end offerings and anyone on insurance or a tighter budget.

Sage Health's membership model is also built around the same affordability principle that has guided the practice since day one. The entry-level Sage Health Membership is $88 per month and includes a wellness credit toward services such as chiropractic, acupuncture, massage and skincare, along with member pricing and benefits. The next tier of membership includes unlimited yoga and wellness classes on top of the wellness credit ($188 / mo), which is the going rate for many boutique fitness

In effect, the memberships turn what could be a collection of individual wellness expenses into a more cohesive relationship with one center.

"I love having a lot of different lenses to look at patients with," Dr. Sage says, "and really creating almost a hive of really beautiful services and providers that can offer a wonderful experience to all the patients."

In an industry where the going-out-of-business rate is nearly as reliable as the growth statistics, that's not a small thing. It's the reason Sage Health is still standing, and still evolving, 26 years in.
