7 Reasons We're Giving Thanks for San Diego This Season

It’s that time of year again. The pumpkin spice is flowing, the Thanksgiving eats are in the oven, and everyone on your Instagram feed is posting about what they’re grateful for.

But honestly? Living in San Diego makes the gratitude game almost too easy.

While our friends on the East Coast are currently digging their cars out of early snow or frantically searching for their puffer coats, we are likely contemplating whether to wear the light hoodie or the heavy hoodie to beach yoga.

As editor-in-chief of the wellness scene here, I've see a lot of trends come and go (remember goat yoga?), but the one constant is this city’s incredible ability to nurture the soul. So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, here are 7 reasons we are absolutely obsessed with living in America’s Finest City.

1. The weather (obviously).

Okay, we had to start here. It’s the cliché that never gets old and it’s the backdrop to living the San Diego lifestyle. Outdoor yoga in November? Yes. A beach walk between meetings? Absolutely. Sunrise surf session before Thanksgiving dinner? Standard. When you live here long enough, “checking the weather” becomes an activity reserved for out-of-town trips.

2. We are the farm-to-table capital.

If you love fresh food, you are literally in the best place in the country. Did you know that San Diego County has the most farms of any county in the United States? And it's not just giant commercial fields; we’re talking about thousands of small, family-owned farms growing everything from avocados to exotic dragon fruit.

3. Our gym has no walls.

Why stare at a treadmill screen when you can hike Torrey Pines?

One of the biggest things we’re grateful for is that our landscape begs you to move. We have world-class hiking trails, miles of bike paths, and an ocean that doubles as a playground. From surfing at Swami’s to kayaking in La Jolla Cove, living here means an active lifestyle happens almost by accident. You don't have to force yourself to go to the gym when the gym is a stunning sandstone cliff overlooking the Pacific.

4. The tacos.

In San Diego, tacos and burritos are a love language and everyone has "their spot." We argue passionately about where to get the best California Burrito (fries inside, always) versus who has the most tender carnitas. And let’s be honest, in the wellness scene we know that balance is key, and sometimes "wellness" looks like a plate of Carne Asada fries shared with friends after a long surf session.

5. A dog-friendly paradise.

Scientific studies show that pets lower stress and boost happiness, and San Diego has taken that to heart. We are consistently ranked one of the most dog-friendly cities in America.

We’re thankful for the pure, unadulterated joy of watching pups splash around at the OB Dog Beach, for restaurants that offer "puppuccinos" on the menu, and for Fiesta Island runs. In San Diego, your wellness journey almost always includes your four-legged best friend, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

6. A wellness + holistic health mecca.

It is no secret that San Diego is a magnet for healers, forward-thinkers, and wellness pioneers. We arguably have more yoga studios, acupuncture clinics, and meditation centers per capita than anywhere else.

We are so grateful to be surrounded by so many local experts who prioritize health from the inside out. Looking for your next healer in your neighborhood? Browse our San Diego Wellness Business Directory to find a studio or practitioner near you today.

7. The sunset ritual.

There is a unique phenomenon in San Diego that you don't see everywhere. Around 4:45 PM in the winter (or 7:30 PM in the summer), people actually pause.

Whether you’re in OB, Encinitas, or Sunset Cliffs, locals stop what they are doing to watch the sun dip below the horizon. It is a daily moment of collective mindfulness, and a built-in meditation practice that reminds us to breathe, slow down, and appreciate the day. And if you’re lucky, you might just catch that elusive “green flash.”

From all of us at Locally Well, Happy Thanksgiving! Go eat a taco, hug a farmer, pet a dog, and soak up some sun. Be well!
