Luma Yoga Opens in Bankers Hill With a Mission Bigger Than the Mat

Elena Barbour practiced yoga for seven years across studios that she found either too corporate and power-driven, or too traditionally spiritual, never landing in a place that felt like home. So she built one. Luma Yoga + Wellness, tucked into a spot that straddles San Diego’s Bankers Hill and Little Italy neighborhoods, is opening its doors this week with a core mission to help practitioners and the community get grounded, both on and off the mat.

"I really want to create a place where you can just take a breath and not have to feel like you need to go, go, go, do, do, do, or perform,” says Barbour.

Barbour is not new to entrepreneurship. After successfully building and eventually selling Little Sprouts, a local chain of preschools across San Diego County, she decided to channel her entrepreneurial expertise into building something deeply personal and supportive — a community rooted in what she calls feminine energy.

"I think that grace is so hard for women," Barbour says. "We put so much on ourselves. We're expected to perform in so many unseen ways. I really want Luma to be a place where people feel seen and accepted and show up for themselves."

When Barbour talks about "feminine energy," she's careful to explain what she means. It's not about gender or exclusion (all humans are welcome, and the studio's tagline makes that explicit). Masculine energy, as she frames it, is about doing, outward achievement, constant motion. Feminine energy settles, listens, and allows for space to receive and slow down.

"Savasana isn't just a two-minute afterthought here," Barbour explains. "We prioritize nervous system regulation. It’s about retraining your brain to know you are safe and that you aren't being chased by a predator, even if your to-do list feels like one."

At Luma Yoga, the class lineup runs from vinyasa flows and restorative sessions to prenatal yoga and what will become the studio's signature offering: a strong-and-slow flow that builds genuine heat and strength, but holds poses for three full breaths rather than rushing through transitions. The philosophy behind it is physical and practical as longer holds improve alignment awareness and body attunement, but the deeper intention also gives practitioners time to actually arrive within each pose.

Community Support Beyond the Mat

Alongside the studio, Barbour is also launching the Luma Initiative, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit designed to serve women navigating life transitions such as difficult divorces, unhealthy relationships, and single motherhood. Drawing directly from her own experience as a single mom of two, Barbour recognized that support for women in these moments tends to be siloed or hard to find.

"You don’t know what you need when you’re in it," Barbour shares, speaking from her own experience. "We want to be a one-stop resource hub where women feel equipped from all angles, not just the physical."

The initiative will offer three-month cohort programs for women in transition. Participants will receive free access to studio classes, financial literacy and career support, therapist-led support groups, and nutrition resources.

In addition, Barbour plans to launch Luma Social, a quarterly pop-up wellness event that will include breathwork workshops, sound healing, and vendor markets, with proceeds funding the nonprofit arm. A donation-based outdoor class series in local parks is also in the works. The community-building, she says, is as central to the mission as any pose on the mat.

"I want Luma to be the opposite of those big box studios,” says Barbour. “We do want to open multiple locations to be genuinely accessible, but never losing that softness.”
