Rachel Nelson spent three years in New York falling in love with the city's social wellness clubs, its corner bodegas, and its endless calendar of events. Then she came home to California and noticed that San Diego already had all of it but it was just scattered across town.
There was the coffee shop you could never get a seat in, the Pilates studio with the perfect aesthetic, the pop-up that sold out in an hour. "There's always just a little bit of everything everywhere," Nelson says. "There hasn't been a home for all of it."
Enter Busy Social Club (BSC), a new members-only social and wellness house bringing a New York City loft vibe to the East Village. Designed as a flexible haven to work, move, caffeinate, and connect, BSC combines a loft-style workspace, an intimate movement studio, an onsite bodega, and curated events into a single ecosystem built specifically for the San Diego lifestyle.

Instead of forcing people to dart across town between workouts, laptop sessions, and coffee runs, Nelson envisioned a unified space where members could transition seamlessly throughout their day, similar to exclusive members-only clubs in New York.
“Coming from New York, there’s Soho House and Zero Bond and Casa Cipriani, and all of those don't make sense in San Diego because they're stuffy and exclusive – but the actual shell of what they are and the foundation of it makes sense here,” explains Nelson.
For Nelson, community building is a natural extension of her work as the founder of Booked and Busy Agency, a creative marketing firm known for high-impact events, influencer strategy, and brand partnerships with global names like Reebok to smaller local brands like Activate House, the boutique wellness brand with locations in North Park and Bird Rock.
To test the Busy Social Club concept, Nelson ran three events that mapped to the club's pillars: a movement event at Activate House, a caffeine pop-up at Java Earth, and a big social night with tiny tattoos, embroidery, a bar, a DJ, and live music. Then a location "fell into her lap" in mid-August that aligned with the NYC loft aesthetic – and she was in.

Located at 710 13th Street in East Village, Busy Social Club is designed around a large, open loft-style space with soaring ceilings, oversized windows and an upstairs loft overlooking the main floor. “The windows are so tall, they're nearly impossible to photograph,” Nelson says. The aesthetic blends New York-inspired interiors with playful details, including a zebra-print couch and a pool table that Nelson plans to re-cover in zebra fabric.
The main space, called HOUSE, functions as a flexible place to work and socialize, with Wi-Fi, communal tables, couches and quieter areas for calls. A member kitchen allows people to bring their own food, while a photo booth and pool table give members reasons to step away from their screens.
“I want people to treat this like their home,” Nelson says. “It's supposed to feel like a home away from home.”
The club's caffeine component comes through DOUBLE SHOT, an onsite coffee bar and an NYC-inspired “bodega” bringing curated beverages, snacks, and product discovery into the space. Nelson is exploring brand residencies that would allow companies to showcase and sell products inside the club, with potential partners spanning categories such as functional wellness, sleep and mushrooms.

Movement is one of Busy Social Club's central pillars, delivered through BODĒ (pronounced “body”), an intimate, mat-based studio offering yoga, sculpt, mat Pilates and classes incorporating mini reformers.
Nelson chose a mat-based format to allow for a broader range of classes rather than building the studio around traditional reformers alone. The room is designed for all genders and experience levels, with equipment provided so members don't need to bring their own mats or workout gear.
Depending on membership level, members receive included BODĒ classes and open-studio access, with additional classes available at member pricing. Nonmembers will also be able to book BODĒ classes separately, including through ClassPass as that option becomes available.

Busy Social Club offers several membership tiers between $89-$189 / month, designed for different levels of engagement. Each includes access to HOUSE, Wi-Fi, the member kitchen, member events, brand perks and access to the club's planned LOCALS ONLY partner program.
The program will bring together businesses across San Diego, with potential partners in movement, restaurants, wellness, retail, entertainment and hospitality. Members will receive preferred rates, discounts and exclusive access at participating businesses.
Day passes are planned for $35 and will include full-day HOUSE access, Wi-Fi, the member kitchen and access to DOUBLE SHOT and the bodega.
To celebrate the club’s opening, Busy Social Club will host a preview party on Saturday, October 24, followed by a week-long soft launch.
