Years ago, while relentlessly pursuing a career I thought I would have forever, I ran into challenges with a new manager. My experience working changed dramatically. I began to get the Sunday Scaries at the thought of working each Monday. Because I loved my job so much, it was difficult for me to accept my circumstances and make a healthy change. Inspired to initiate a culture change at work, I went back to school for a master's in leadership and nonprofit management. While this helped me better understand work environments, it did not support my healing. The effects of toxic leadership are harmful and long-lasting. The silver lining is that this experience led me to embark on a personal healing journey that introduced me to beautiful practices, like Reiki and Breathwork, that weren't before on my radar.
Over the years, I have taken mindful practices with me from position to position. It was through a high touchpoint leadership position that I realized I needed to build a ritual that started with me every morning. Dedicating 15 minutes of meditation each morning helped me support a growing and evolving team, without feeling depleted at the end of the day. On the days I skipped my meditation, I was only setting myself up to play catch up the rest of the day and was exhausted by noon.
